LIFE ON BOARD
The young people who board one of the Pacific association’s sailing boats are full crew members on a “work boat”.
Building character on a workboat
The young people who embark on one of the Pacifique association’s sailing boats are considered to be full crew members on a “work boat”.
Under the guidance of a professional crew and according to their skills and abilities, each participant is involved in keeping day and night watches, in the daily tasks inherent to life on board, in some maintenance work on the boat at ports of call and in victualling (supplying the boat with food).
Under the supervision of the educators on board, the young people must also work on their ability to take on responsibilities on board, on their personal objectives in relation to life skills and know-how, highlighting their skills and thus developing new ones.

Boarding conditions
Pacifique is supervised by the placement licensing service (SASLP). It authorises young minors between the ages of 14 and 18 or older to embark. The educational team determines whether an embarkation is possible, based on the young person’s social network and parents and their determination to live this adventure.
Encouraging synergies
Through the various scientific, artistic and socio-educational projects that take place on board, sometimes simultaneously, the Pacifique association encourages interaction, synergies and exchanges of knowledge between the crew members, in a multidisciplinary approach.
Quarters
In order to ensure that the boat is manned during navigation, the crew is divided into watch teams which take turns. The watches are organised over a period of 3 hours, in a 24-hour rotation.

Water and electricity
The sailing boats are equipped with shower and toilet facilities. As the boat’s drinking water resources are limited, responsible consumption is required.
The sailing boats are equipped with electrical outlets for recharging the batteries of navigation and leisure equipment, but electricity should be used sparingly.

Some additional information
Rules
The consumption of alcohol on board is strictly forbidden. The use of mobile phones is restricted for all persons on board. Young people are not allowed to use their personal telephone on board. However, they will be able to have contact with their relatives thanks to a telephone made available to them at times chosen and defined by the educational team. They may only be used during off-shift times.
Medical issues
Before embarking, young people must provide a medical certificate of good health and be up to date with vaccinations. They must also be covered by repatriation insurance. If the young person is undergoing medical treatment, they must inform the educational team. The boats are equipped with a medical kit, which can only be used in case of emergency and on the advice of a doctor. The crew is not authorised to issue medication in other circumstances.
Seasickness
Seasickness is often caused by hunger, cold or fatigue. It usually does not last more than a day. No one is immune to seasickness, even the most experienced sailors. If the young person thinks he or she may be prone to seasickness, he or she can obtain the necessary medication as a preventive measure. Ask your pharmacist or the Pacifique association for information.
Meals and stewardship
Meals and washing up are organised in teams, generally the same as the watch. The provisioning of the boat is entrusted to the crew, under the responsibility of the skipper. The skipper is responsible for the supply and storage of foodstuffs, particularly perishable goods.
Sleeping arrangements
On boarding, each young person is allocated a cabin by the skipper. In these cabins, which have two or three places, mixed sex is not allowed.
Personal belongings
Each young person has a storage space in the cabins for their personal belongings. For reasons of space, it is advisable to bring a minimum of clothes. A soft travel bag is ideal, as suitcases cannot be taken on board due to their size. The Pacifique team can provide you with information on the equipment required for your stay and will provide you with a precise list. Pacifique declines all responsibility for valuables that team members carry with them.
