OUR SAILBOATS

Ideal platforms for oceanographic expeditions in the service of science, education and art

Why sailboats ?

Our two sailing ships, Fleur de Passion and Mauritius, are perfectly suited to a variety of uses depending on the multidisciplinary expeditions they may undertake. Travelling mainly under sail, and therefore silent and non-polluting, our sailing ships are designed for transoceanic crossings but are also capable of sailing close to the coast thanks to their shallow draught.

Equipped with specific technological devices, they can continuously collect and transmit field data and are also formidable vehicles for raising awareness among decision-makers and the general public.

Fleur de Passion

Fleur de Passion is a traditional 33-metre wooden ketch with a steel structure. Formerly a Kriegsfischkutter (KFK) type mine layer for the German Navy, built in 1941 in the Bremen shipyards, it was transferred to France in 1945, then decommissioned and converted into a ketch by a private owner in 1976.

From the 1980s onwards, it hosted its first scientific projects with French academic institutions such as Ifremer.

From the 1980s onwards, it hosted its first scientific projects with French academic institutions such as Ifremer.

Since 2009, under the auspices of the Fondation Pacifique, it has carried out long-distance expeditions and specific missions in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, Red Sea, Baltic and Caribbean, as well as a round-the-world voyage in the wake of Magellan from 2015 to 2019.

MAURITIUS

Mauritius is a 30-metre steel schooner built in 1963 at the Breman shipyards in Zwartsluis, the Netherlands.

She entered service with Pacifique in 2015, carrying out her first missions in the Mediterranean and the near Atlantic. In 2017, she was equipped and prepared for sailing in polar latitudes.

In 2020, under the auspices of the Fondation Pacifique, the schooner embarked on the Arctic expedition. This mission, conducted in partnership with the University of Geneva, aims to measure carbon dioxide and methane concentrations in a region particularly vulnerable to global warming. After two years of sailing between Norway, Svalbard, Iceland and the west coast of Greenland, Mauritius will hand over to another boat tasked with continuing the expedition with a round trip through the legendary Northwest Passage.

Since then, alongside Fleur de Passion, it has continued to welcome young people in rehabilitation as part of the ‘Jeunes en mer’ programme.
